A change in who is watching has to fade, because attention always does.

What happened around it ran in both directions. Twenty fourteen. He denies being Bitcoin's creator. Twenty nineteen. A joke poll makes him chief executive of Dogecoin. Twenty twenty-one. Tesla buys Bitcoin, takes it for cars, then stops, over the energy that mining uses. Twenty twenty-two. Tesla sells about three quarters of what it bought. The same account was behind the moves up and the moves down. So a post was never a direction. It was only a crowd arriving.

What counts as a whale? There is no official line. The word is relative to the supply and to how much of it trades. In Bitcoin, watchers start using the word at a thousand coins. Twenty-one million bitcoin will ever exist, and about nineteen point seven million had been mined by twenty twenty-four. So a thousand coins is a rounding error against the supply, and still more than a thin market can absorb at once.

Who is behind a whale wallet? Size tells you nothing about intent. There are five kinds of holder at this scale, and only one of them is the lone trader people picture. An early individual holder. A company holding coins as a treasury. A fund, or a market maker. A foundation, or a protocol treasury. And an exchange, or a custodian. Four of those are spending their own money. The fifth is holding yours.

Whose coins is an exchange holding? When you leave crypto on an exchange, the exchange holds the keys. Your balance is a number in its database. The coins themselves sit in wallets it controls. So one address can hold more bitcoin than almost anybody alive, and every coin in it is a claim somebody else has on that company. Which is why the biggest wallets on any chain are usually custodians. They are not investors. They are warehouses.

What do crypto scams look like?

So how does a fake website get into your wallet? Phishing works because the copy looks exactly like the original. A sponsored search result, a link in an email, one letter different in the address. You log in, or type your seed phrase to restore a wallet - and the person behind the copy now has it too. So remember this line. No real wallet, exchange or support team will ever ask for your seed phrase. Bookmark the sites you use, and only ever log in from the bookmark.

How does a fake website steal a wallet?

And can malware change an address after you paste it? Yes - and this one needs no story at all. It is called a clipper, and it hides on your computer. Here is what it does. You copy a friend's wallet address. The clipper swaps it for the scammer's address. You paste it, and send. And the coins go to the scammer. The fix takes five seconds. After you paste, check the first and last six characters against the original, before you confirm.

Can malware change the address you paste?

So what do you do if it has already happened? Stop, and send nothing more. Then work through this, in order. Move whatever is left to a brand new wallet. Report the address to the exchange or platform. File a report with the police, or the FBI's internet crime center. And ignore anyone offering to recover it for a fee. That last one matters most. A recovery offer is almost always a second scam.

So where did Bitcoin actually come from? In October two thousand eight, a nine-page paper appeared on a cryptography mailing list. It was signed Satoshi Nakamoto, and it described digital cash with no bank in the middle. Money sent straight from one person to another, with a shared public record of every payment. That record is the blockchain. And somebody had to start it.

So what is inside the very first block? On the third of January, two thousand nine, Satoshi mined block zero - the genesis block. Hidden inside it is one line of text, copied from that day's front page of The Times. Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks. It works as a timestamp - and it reads like a note on why Bitcoin was built. One more detail. The fifty bitcoins from that block can never be spent.

Then how did Satoshi disappear? Slowly, and in public. For two years, Satoshi wrote code and answered questions on a forum called BitcoinTalk. Nine days after the genesis block, Satoshi sent ten bitcoins to a cryptographer named Hal Finney - the first Bitcoin transaction between two people. Here is how the rest of it played out. October two thousand eight, the whitepaper. January two thousand nine, the genesis block. Twenty ten, the code is handed to Gavin Andresen. April twenty eleven, the last known email. That email said: I've moved on to other things. After that, the name never wrote again.

So what did Satoshi leave behind? A mountain of coins, mined in Bitcoin's first year. About one million bitcoins, spread over roughly twenty thousand block rewards, fifty coins each. Researchers traced them by a pattern in the early blocks, so the figure is an estimate, not a confirmed balance. And apart from that first payment to Hal Finney, not one of those coins has ever moved.

So who is Satoshi Nakamoto? Plenty of names have been put forward. Not one has held up. Hal Finney, who denied it before he died in twenty fourteen. Nick Szabo, who designed Bit Gold, and denies it. Mining income moves with things no miner controls. In April twenty twenty-four, the halving cut the reward for every block from six point two five bitcoin to three point one two five. Take the mining side. It is paid in bitcoin, it moves with price and difficulty, and the reward halves roughly every four years. Now compare that with AI hosting. A client pays per rack or per kilowatt, under a contract that runs for years, tied to uptime, not to the price of a coin. That is why many miners do not pick one. They keep mining, and rent part of the site to AI.

How is hosting AI different from mining?

Not by default. A typical mining hall is missing four things. Not the liquid cooling that GPU racks need, not the fast network that training clusters depend on, not the security standards enterprise clients check, and not the staff trained on GPUs instead of mining machines. Bolt GPU racks into an air-cooled hall, and they overheat and slow themselves down. The power is the head start. The retrofit is still real work.

So the score is not one measurement - it is six, blended into one. Volatility, twenty-five percent - how wild the price swings have been, market momentum and trading volume, another twenty-five, social media chatter, fifteen percent, historical survey data, fifteen percent, when it is running, bitcoin's share of the whole market, ten percent, and search trends - what people are actually typing into Google - the last ten. It pulls straight from Bitcoin's own trading data, and from what people are actually saying about it. None of that is a price. All of it is a mood.

How does that score get built?

The reason the number swings so hard is not mysterious - sentiment feeds on itself. Prices dip, fear spreads, because a falling chart reads as danger, and fear turns into more selling - which drops the price further, and starts the loop again. Flip it around, and greed runs the exact same loop upward - which is why extremes on this index can run so far, in either direction.

Why does it swing so hard?

There's a reason this index has millions of readers, and it traces back to one old line about market psychology. Be fearful when others are greedy, and greedy when others are fearful. Extreme readings on this index have shown up again and again, in cycle after cycle - long before this particular chart ever existed. The index itself is not a crystal ball - it is just a number trying to measure which side of that line the crowd is standing on.

Why do millions watch a mood?

Here is what that score cannot do, no matter which way it points. It cannot predict where the price goes next, it cannot tell you whether any project is actually any good, it cannot replace your own research, and it was never built to be a signal to buy or sell anything. So what is actually holding the price up? A brand new token is not listed on a big exchange. It trades on a decentralized exchange, against a pool of real money the creators put up themselves. That pool is the price. Buy, and you push the price up. Sell, and you pull it down. And that same pool is the only thing you can ever sell back into. So if the people who created the token also control that pool - they can take the real money out, and leave you holding a token that no longer trades.

So here is the whole trick, in four moves. From the other side of the screen, a rug pull is just four moves. First, they seed a pool - the token, paired with real money. Then they market it hard - hype, a countdown, a promise. Buyers pour their own money in, and the price climbs. Then they pull the pool, and the price is zero. The whole thing can take an afternoon - and every step was planned before the token existed.

How the trick actually works

So is it always the liquidity pool? Not quite. The liquidity pull is just the fastest version. There are five shapes worth knowing. The liquidity pull, where the pool vanishes within the hour. The team dump, where they keep most of the supply and sell it into you. The hidden backdoor, where the contract lets them mint or freeze at will. The honeypot, where you are allowed to buy, but the code will not let you sell. And the slow bleed, where a team just quietly cashes out for months. Different speeds. Same ending.

Is it always the liquidity?

So what if the liquidity really is locked? Some of these scams really do lock the pool - sometimes for years, and the lock is completely real. The money genuinely cannot be pulled. But then look at who holds the tokens. If the team kept most of the supply for themselves, they never needed the pool at all. They just sell, in stages, into every buyer who shows up, until the chart is a staircase heading straight down. A healthy launch keeps any handful of wallets well under a fifth of the whole supply. When the top few wallets are holding seventy or eighty percent, one decision ends it.

What if the pool is locked?

So how do you actually check one? You do not need to read code. You need a block explorer and four questions. Can the team still move the liquidity, or is it genuinely locked. Who holds the supply, and is it a few wallets or thousands. Can the owner still change the rules - mint, pause, or tax. And does the yield have a real source, or is it just paying you with new tokens. If a token cannot pass those four, there is always another one that can. Because a rug pull is not bad luck.
