The trade that never closes

A normal futures contract has a deadline, and that deadline is what pulls the price back to reality. Perpetuals removed it completely. So one thing has to do that job instead - a fee, paid directly between the two sides of the trade. It is called the funding rate. Trade above the real price, and the buyers pay the sellers. Trade below it, and the sellers pay the buyers.

So what replaced the deadline?

On a quiet day it is tiny - a fraction of a percent, every eight hours. In a heated market, it can spike ten times higher. And it is paid trader to trader, not to the exchange. Liquidations are not checked against the last trade though - they are checked against a mark price, an index built from several exchanges at once. So a single ugly wick cannot wipe you out by accident.

So how big is that fee, really?

The funding fee is not what wipes people out. Leverage is. With one thousand dollars of margin at five times leverage, you control five thousand dollars of exposure. A two percent move in the real price becomes roughly a ten percent swing on your money. Push that higher, and the room to be wrong shrinks fast. Five times leverage, and the price can move twenty percent against you. Twenty times, and that drops to five percent. One hundred times, and one percent is enough. That is the whole trade-off. More leverage, less room to be wrong.

So where is the actual danger?

Two settings decide how contained the damage is. Isolated margin. Only that position's margin is at risk. One bad trade stays contained. The rest of your account is untouched. Cross margin. Draws on your whole balance. Useful for hedging several positions. One bad trade can drain everything. There is also a backstop, if a position cannot close in time - but here is the honest list of what can still go wrong. Prolonged funding, eating into your profits. A thin market, with a brief but violent wick. An exchange outage, at the worst possible moment. Auto deleveraging, if the insurance fund cannot cover it. None of that is rare in theory. All four have happened, on real exchanges, in real crashes.

So what actually protects you?

Neither a company, nor a court decides where this price sits. A number, recalculated every few hours, does that instead. It trades day and night, on centralized platforms and on-chain ones alike. Binance. Bybit. Kraken. Or fully on-chain, like Hyperliquid. So back to that trade with no expiration date. It never closes on its own. But every few hours, it still has to prove it is honest. What Are Perpetual Futures?

In 2016, a woman filled Wembley Arena and told a sold-out crowd her cryptocurrency would bury Bitcoin. Her name was Dr. Ruja Ignatova. The cryptocurrency was called OneCoin. Investors put in more than four billion dollars, and some estimates run far higher. There was one problem with OneCoin. It did not exist. There was no blockchain, no coins were ever mined, and that was true from the very first day. Stay to the end and you will know the one check that would have caught it in a minute.

The coin that was never there

Ruja Ignatova was not an obvious con artist. She held a law doctorate from a German university, had studied at Oxford, and had worked at McKinsey. That record did the work a real product could not. OneCoin did not sell a coin. It sold education packages and a commission for every friend you brought in, so money from new members paid the members who joined before them. That is the definition of a Ponzi scheme. On the slides: a coin you could mine, a price that only rose, an exchange to cash out. What was real: a database they could edit, a price set in an office, a system with no way out.

Why would anyone believe this?

Strip away the events and the branding, and OneCoin was three things. A private database of balances. A website that played a mining animation. An internal exchange where withdrawals mostly failed. No independent blockchain existed. You could not send a OneCoin to anyone outside the system, and no real exchange ever listed it. When members asked to see the blockchain, the company stalled, then said it was being rebuilt. For a coin sold to millions as the next Bitcoin, that is a remarkable thing to be missing.

So what was OneCoin actually?

None of this was hidden. Independent experts flagged OneCoin in its first year. By 2016, financial regulators in Britain, Germany, Italy and more than a dozen other countries had issued public warnings. And OneCoin kept growing anyway. 2014, OneCoin launches. 2016, regulators warn worldwide. October 2017, Ruja disappears. 2019, her brother is arrested. 2022, the FBI Ten Most Wanted list. The warnings were loud. The money was louder.

The warnings started in year one

Put yourself in 2016, at one of those events. You do not have to be an expert to check a cryptocurrency. You need four questions. Can you inspect the blockchain yourself? Is it listed somewhere you do not control? Does the product work without recruiting? Can you withdraw today, without a reason? For OneCoin, every honest answer was the same. No. No. No. No. Any one of them, asked out loud in that arena, ended the pitch.

What would have caught it?

On the 25th of October 2017, Ruja Ignatova flew from Sofia to Athens. She has not been seen in public since. In 2022 she became the first woman on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list, and the reward for information reached five million dollars. The people around her did not vanish: Karl Sebastian Greenwood, co-founder; Mark Scott, the lawyer who moved the money; Gilbert Armenta, who laundered hundreds of millions; Irina Dilkinska, head of legal. Her brother Konstantin pleaded guilty and testified against her. Ruja is still missing.

Back to that arena in 2016. OneCoin worked because a crowd wanted a coin that only went up, and someone with the right resume told them she had one. The technology was never the point. While you only receive, the key stays hidden. Your first spend puts it in the open. Never spent from an address? Then there is nothing there to break. Yet. But spend once, and your wallet publishes the key. Onto the permanent record. Forever. Every address you have spent from is exposed. Reuse one, and it just sits there. Waiting.

Is your key already public?

Here is why today matters. An attacker copies your exposed key now. It is public. It is free. It is already on chain. Then they wait for the hardware. And break it years later. The name for this is: harvest now, decrypt later. And a blockchain is the perfect thing to harvest. It is a public record that never forgets. You cannot un-publish a key from twenty seventeen.

They can. It has already started. Researchers picked new signature schemes. Quantum computers cannot reverse them. The first ones were locked in, in twenty twenty-four. The math is the easy part. Moving everyone onto it is not. A coordinated upgrade? Doable. A new address format? Doable. Every wallet moving at once? Doable. Coins with lost keys? Never. So how do you actually become a validator?

The word for this is slashing. In proof of work, a bad miner just wastes electricity. In proof of stake, a bad validator loses money - automatically. Four things trigger it, and the protocol catches all of them itself. Signing two conflicting blocks. Going offline for too long. Proposing an invalid block. Trying to rewrite old history. Any one of those, and part of the stake is gone before you can argue about it. No court. No refund. The code just runs.

So what actually stops them lying?

Proof of stake fixed the energy problem. It did not fix scale. It swapped one kind of advantage for another. Three problems came with it. The rich can compound. Staking pools concentrate the vote. An old key could still try to rewrite the past. None of them is hypothetical. All three are on the criticism list of every major network. The richest wallets do not need a warehouse. They just need to already be rich. So call it a fair trade, or call it a new kind of gatekeeper. Either way, it is not neutral.

Bitcoin moved while you were asleep. You wake up, and the number on your screen is a different number. So who did that? There is no central bank here. No committee sets this price. That is all there will ever be. It was written into the code before most of them existed. No committee can raise it. No emergency can print more.

Who moved it?

A price is not a fact about an object. It is an agreement between two people. One person willing to sell. One willing to buy. Where they meet is the price. So Bitcoin has two sides, and only one is up for grabs. The supply side was settled in the code. New coins arrive on a schedule that only ever slows down. Fifty new coins a block. Then twenty-five. Then twelve and a half. Then six and a quarter. Now just over three. Every four years it halves, and nobody votes on it. So every argument about the price is an argument about demand.

Who Controls Bitcoin's Price? Not Who You Think

You bought your first crypto. You can see the balance on the screen. But who is actually holding it? Because on most platforms, the answer is not you. Stay to the end and you will know which of the two kinds you are using, and the one thing to do the moment a trade settles. Start with the number that surprises people most. Zero. That is how many private keys you hold when your coins sit on a centralized exchange. The company holds every one of them.

Who is actually holding it?

An exchange is a marketplace. Nothing more mysterious than that. It matches somebody who wants to buy with somebody who wants to sell, and takes a small cut for standing in the middle. It is also where the price comes from, and where liquidity lives. Liquidity just means there are enough buyers and sellers that your order fills at roughly the price you expected. But how that middle is built is where the two families split. One of them is a company. The other is a piece of code. And that single difference decides everything else about them.

So what is an exchange, actually?

A centralized exchange is a business. Coinbase. Binance. Crypto.com. It runs an order book, it checks who you are, and it keeps your coins in wallets that it controls. A decentralized exchange has no company in it at all. You connect your own wallet, a smart contract does the swap, and your keys never leave your hands. Most of them do not even run an order book. You trade against a pool of coins that other users put there, and those users take the fees. So look at what each one actually hands you. Centralized: deep liquidity and fast fills, cash in and cash out, it holds your keys. Decentralized: you keep your keys, no identity check, thinner markets and network fees. Neither column is the winner. They are answers to two different questions.

A company, or a smart contract?

One thing confuses every beginner, and it is written on every screen. You will see it written as BTC / USD. The first one is what you are buying. The second is what you are paying with. That is the whole idea. A price only means something measured against something else. And they come in three kinds. Crypto against real money. Crypto against other crypto. Crypto against a stablecoin. Which pairs a platform offers decides what you can buy directly, and what costs you three trades and three sets of fees.

What is a trading pair?

Now the part that catches people out. The friendlier platform is the one where you own nothing. A centralized exchange feels safe. There is a support line. There is a password reset. It looks like online banking. But those are exactly the features that require somebody else to be holding the keys. Your balance is a row in that company's database. The coins behind it sit in their wallets, pooled with everybody else's. There is an old line about this and it has outlasted every exchange that ignored it. Not your keys, not your coins. So do not treat an exchange like a bank account. It is a place you pass through.

Before you trust any platform with a single coin, run the same five checks. App-based two-factor. Most coins in cold storage. A licence you have heard of. Fees you can find without hunting. A history you can look up. Miss one of those and you are not choosing an exchange, you are hoping. And once you are in, four habits do most of the work. Turn the two-factor on first. Start with an amount you can afford to lose. Learn limit orders before market orders. Then move what you are not trading off the platform. So, back to the balance on your screen. Because the whole thing turns on a single figure, and it is not on the box. Five cents. That is roughly what a profitable miner pays for one kilowatt hour of electricity. Ordinary home power costs considerably more, so the first thing to check is your bill, not your budget. Mining is not really a hardware hobby. It is an energy business wearing a hardware costume. And this is who you are bidding against. A handful of cards. Power at the price your utility charges. Heat and noise you live with. Thousands of machines in one building. Built beside a dam or a geothermal field. Electricity bought in industrial bulk. It also gets harder on its own. As more machines join, difficulty rises, so the same rig earns less each month for the same work. Four numbers decide this, and only one is the hardware. Your electricity cost. What are you actually competing with?

Add the wattage up, then buy twenty percent more. A supply running flat out wastes power as heat.

So what goes into a rig?

Everyone worries about the graphics cards. They cost the most, so they get the attention. The part that burns houses down costs about two dollars. Riser cards need their own power, and there is a cheap adapter that lets you take it from the drive connector instead. It fits. It works. It is a known fire hazard. Those connectors were designed for a hard drive, not for a card pulling seventy-five watts. Run a proper six-pin cable from the power supply to every riser. Directly. Every time. It is the one instruction in this build with no acceptable shortcut.

The cheapest part is the dangerous one

Bolting the frame together is a Saturday afternoon. The half that decides your result happens after it boots, and nobody photographs it. You install the mining system. Then the drivers. It put two hundred and fifty million dollars into Bitcoin. Then it never stopped buying. Five years later it had spent more than thirty-five billion dollars. Here is the question almost nobody asks about it. Where did the money come from? Because a company that size does not have thirty-five billion dollars sitting in a drawer.

The purchase

Michael Saylor co-founded MicroStrategy in nineteen eighty-nine. Business intelligence software. Dashboards and reports. It went public in ninety-eight and nothing about it was exciting. Then he looked at the cash sitting on the balance sheet and asked a simple question: what will this buy in ten years? His answer was: less. Every company with idle cash has roughly the same four options, and every treasurer knows them. Leave it in the bank. Buy back your own stock. Park it in government bonds. Or buy Bitcoin with it. He picked the last one, out loud, in public, with the shareholders watching.

Why would a software company do this?

The software business was profitable, and small. Its profits went in too, but they were never the engine. The engine was the capital markets. There are two ways a public company raises money it does not have, and Strategy used both, repeatedly. Bonds that can convert into shares. Cash today, dilution later. Interest due whatever Bitcoin does. New shares sold straight into the market. Every existing holder owns a little less. Nothing to repay, and no way back. Borrow, buy coins. Issue shares, buy coins. Repeat that for five years. By twenty twenty-five the company held over five hundred and thirty thousand coins. That is the largest corporate stack on earth, and about one coin in forty that will ever exist.

So where did the money come from?

In twenty twenty-two he stepped down as chief executive to work on the Bitcoin strategy full time. In twenty twenty-five the company dropped the MicroStrategy name and simply called itself Strategy. Which is honest, in a way. Look at what it actually is now. It is barely a software business. It is not a safe cash cushion. It is a leveraged bet on one asset. And the stock became something else too - a way to hold Bitcoin inside an ordinary brokerage account, years before the spot funds existed.

What is the company now?

That is not a criticism. It is arithmetic. A bet funded with borrowed money gains faster on the way up and loses faster on the way down. The interest is due whether the price cooperates or not. So the shares moved almost exactly with Bitcoin, only harder in both directions. Analysts stopped calling it a software company years ago. Some call it a Bitcoin fund with a reporting tool attached.

Leverage cuts both ways
